Removal of these discolored seeds is necessary for improving the quality and satisfying the customer. Smaller size (≈ 1 mm) of the poppy challenged the efficiency of sorting machines. Low density also contributed to the complication in processing.

The product, after being spread on a vibratory feeder, accelerates down a chute and is inspected by a CCD camera 5400 pixel high speed line scan CCD camera combined with image processor. This compares the product with the color trained template. Defects and contaminants are removed by short puffs of air from pneumatically controlled ejectors. The unique shape of the chute and configuration of ejectors ensure very high efficiency of defect removal and low wastage of good product.
